5 Ways to Prevent Snoring

If you snore, you're not alone - according to the National Sleep Foundation, more than 90 million Americans are affected by this bedtime behavior. While snoring can be an indication of a more serious physical condition - like sleep apnea or heart disease - often, it's nothing more than an annoying nighttime habit that can be treated by shifting a few lifestyle factors.

1. Sleep in a Different Position
Your bedtime behavior has a great impact on how well you sleep at night. People who sleep on their backs are more likely to snore at night, so try mixing up your position - experts recommend sleeping on your side instead, as this position arranges your larynx in such a way that snoring becomes much more difficult. If you're not entirely comfortable in a different position, upgrade your bedding to make it more comfortable. A mattress pad, for example, is a great way to provide additional support and comfort to your back while you sleep.

2. Examine Your Lifestyle Choices
Certain lifestyle factors may be contributing to your snoring habit. Alcohol, cigarettes and high levels of stress can alter your body's chemistry and cause snoring, so try curbing some of these factors to improve your overall health and prevent snoring from occurring in the first place.

3. Try Throat Exercises
The muscles in your throat need to be exercised just like all muscles found throughout your body. While adopting a set workout schedule can have a similar impact on your throat's health, try a few vocal warm-ups that will tighten the muscles - this could include just 15 minutes of singing each day, or following a regimen of exercises that target the throat.

4. Follow a Set Sleep Schedule
Routine is paramount to better sleep. Your body becomes accustomed to sleep schedules when they're properly followed each day, so when your routine is interrupted, your body may respond by snoring. Try following a strict schedule for a few days, and you may notice that your snoring has reduced significantly.

5. Invest in a Humidifier
Does your snoring seem to be seasonal? Dust, allergens, dirt and grime can block the airway and cause snoring. If you suspect this may be the case, invest in a humidifier that can clear these toxins and improve the quality of your air.
