On the first Friday in April, all members of the U.S. workforce are encouraged to lace up their sneakers and walk to their office buildings in honor of National Walk to Work Day. This year, on Apr. 1st, millions will forgo public transportation or skip the miles of traffic for a day of healthy exercise, endorsed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

However, if people knew the multifaceted benefits of regular, brisk walking, they may just choose to walk to work every day.

Promotes Weight Loss
There are a number of health benefits that come from daily walking at a brisk pace. Any form of physical activity that gets your heart pumping and your lungs working is beneficial. But contrary to popular belief, staying healthy doesn't have to involve the latest workout trends, intense weight lifting or long runs. Walking has been known to improve health by helping to keep unwanted pounds off and reducing the risk of a number of diseases. In fact, just 30 minutes of swift walking will burn up to 200 calories.

Improves Circulation and Muscle Strength
One of the most essential parts of walking is that it is easy on the bones and muscles. As an alternative to running on hard pavement, walking can bring welcomed tension relief. Similar to yoga, walking may help to improve muscle strength and joint support as well as provide circulatory benefits. To help get the blood flowing throughout the day, take every opportunity to walk a little extra. For instance, consider parking your car in the farthest spot when you go shopping, take the stairs instead of the elevator and walk to work!

Boosts Your Mood
What's better than starting your day with fresh air and sunshine? It's well known that runners experience a natural high after logging a few hard miles, but walking has also been shown to lift one's mood. Many studies have shown that those who walk regularly feel better overall and experience less stress.

And if you really want to boost your mood, after your daily walk soothe any muscle stiffness or discomfort you may have with the Sunbeam® Massaging Heating Pad. Economically and Environmentally Friendly
If you normally rely on public transportation to get to and from the office each day, the cost of those monthly passes can add up quickly. When the weather permits, walking to and from work each day could end up saving you a good deal of money. Even just opting for a weekly or daily pass to use in the event of rain can save you money off the pricey monthly fare. And of course, relying on your own set of legs instead of gasoline helps both you and the environment.

Bonus: Tips for Walking
Unlike almost all other forms of exercise, walking does not require any special equipment or ability. Walking is accessible and attainable for almost all people. However, there are a number of tips that can help improve your walking experience. First and foremost, comfortable shoes are a must. If you're walking to work, simply carry your dress shoes in your bag and switch when you arrive at the office. Any attire is fine as long as you are comfortable.

Using a step-counter such as a pedometer may help you become more engaged in the activity. Trying to beat your goal of steps from the previous day will motivate you to walk faster and longer each day. It may also be beneficial to plan your route to work in advance. Most likely, it will be different than the route you would typically take in a car so familiarizing yourself beforehand will ensure a smooth journey.
