How to Sleep with Spring Allergies

Spring has fully blossomed, and after a long winter of cold weather and being stuck indoors, it's a major relief for most people. But those with allergies might not be so grateful. With the spring weather comes many different allergens that can cause itchy throats, watery eyes and constant sneezing. Not only can this negatively affect people's everyday lives, but it can also make sleeping each night much more difficult than it should be. Here's how to make it a little easier to get some shut-eye when you're being kept up by your allergies.

Regularly Dust and Vacuum
If you're allergic to dust, it could be bothersome to open the windows of your home. While it's great to get some fresh air circulating, it could also stir up dust around your room. Don't let your allergies be the reason you don't get to experience the warm breeze throughout your house. Be sure to regularly dust - especially around the window sills, where it often piles up - and vacuum to reduce the amount of irritants that you breathe in.

Make Your Bed Extra Cozy
Sure, a stuffy nose and itchy throat will try to keep you up at night, but if your bed is extra soft and comfortable, it will help get you to sleep despite all of that. After all, your bed shouldn't be an additional source of discomfort. Make sure your bed is freshly made with clean sheets, and even try dabbing some drops of soothing fragrance on your pillow cases to help you relax and drift off to sleep. Small changes like these can make you feel as though you're slipping into a brand new bed.

Do Laundry Properly
Use hot water to wash bed sheets and pillow cases to get the freshest, cleanest bedding possible. While you might be tempted to take advantage of the warm weather and hang your clothes out to dry naturally, it might not be the best option for your allergies. When you hang your laundry outside, it can trap pollen and other irritating particles that can aggravate your discomfort. Throw them in the dryer instead.

Use a Humidifier or Air Purifier
The air you breathe can make a world of difference in your comfort level. A humidifier can fill the air with soothing steam, and an air purifier can help trap certain irritants in the air before you breathe them in. Both of these devices can help make your room more comfortable.

Shower Before Bed
If you're the kind of person who prefers morning showers, it might be beneficial to switch up your schedule. Showering before bed can help reduce the amount of pollen and dust that ends up in your bed. Throughout the day, it's inevitable that the irritants in the air land on your clothes, in your hair and on your body. At the very least, tie up long hair, wash your face and change your clothing before bed to keep your bed as clean as possible.
