How to Iron Shirts
  • When ironing cotton dress shirts, use the cotton setting and plenty of steam. Iron lengthwise, not in circles. A little spray starch makes the job easier.

  • Start ironing at the top of a blouse or shirt. Begin with the collar, working toward the middle from the outer edges or points.

  • Lay one shoulder over the narrow edge of the board and iron one side of the front yoke. Then iron the shoulder, across the back (below the collar line), the other shoulder and the remainder of the front yoke, shifting as needed.

  • Iron the sleeves and cuffs next, working down from the underarm seams. (If you don't want a crease, shift the double layer of sleeve fabric and press out the creased line).

  • Next, iron the body of the garment, moving from one half of the front around the back to the second half of the front. If your blouse or shirt doesn't open, slip it over the end of the ironing board and iron front and back in turn.
